Churches with a small membership often struggle to pay the expenses of the church. As the costs of heating, utilities, insurance and upkeep on old buildings rise, they become increasing threats to the survival of a congregation. The Newfane Church is no different.

What is different about the Newfane Church, is that it holds only one fund raiser a year in order to supplement the support provided by members and friends –and that is the Heritage Festival. The “benefit”; which Heritage Festival provides allows the church to cover its expenses and to open its building to a wide range of community uses including:

 Senior meal served monthly
 Monthly blood pressure checks
 Newfane Bell Ensemble
 “Sew Whats” sewing group
 The Linus Quilters
 Ladies Aid Society monthly meetings
 The Garden Club
 Decemberfest Celebration
 Weekly Al-Anon meetings
 Community Table meals
 Small group trainings
 Support Groups

The Heritage Festival also enables the church to give generously to community organizations that
address the medical, physical, and social needs of people in the community. Included in this local mission giving is:

 Grace Cottage Hospital
 Valley Cares
 SEVCA Fuel Assistance
 Groundworks Collaborative
 Newbrook Fire Department
 Brattleboro Hospice
 Women’s Freedom Center
 Townshend Food Shelf
 Brattleboro Affordable Housing
 Winston Prouty Center
 Brattleboro Area Interfaith Youth
 Newbrook Afterschool L’After Program

The church also supports the wider mission of the United Church of Christ, including nationwide as well as global areas of concern and needs.

This continuing presence of the Newfane Heritage Festival is possible because the church’s 65+ members are encouraged and supported by an additional 200+ volunteers. They come from within the community and throughout the Northeast, some from distant places, returning home for their annual pilgrimage to help with Heritage Festival. Our faithful volunteers can be found flipping hamburgers, slicing pie, popping popcorn, emptying trash, peeling apples, rolling dough, moving tables and chairs, and doing the hundreds of other jobs required to make this fund-raiser a success.

Let’s not forget the 60+ artists and craftspeople who display their work – be it painting, pottery, homemade candy, metal, stone or wood work, and more – there is always something for everyone! Thanks to the thousands of visitors who wander about the Common, eat lunch in the Church Outdoor Food Tent, try their luck at the Super Raffle, take home a home-made pie, and have an all-time good time at one of southeastern Vermont’s premier events during Vermont’s most colorful season.
